For the more adventurous out there the area hosts two of the most popular MTB trails in Kwazulu Natal namely the Lake Eland Nature Reserve MTB trail and the Clearwater trails.

Lake Eland Nature Reserve MTB Trails

Mentioned by mountain  bike enthusiasts at all levels as one of the most relaxing rides you can experience on your set of wheels. The three trails are well laid out to cater for the day enthusiast and more experienced riders.

The trails range from 4 to 45 km which takes you through the sandy grassland while experiencing the natural surrounds of the Oribi Gorge at the same time. On the way you might come across antelope and other small game roaming free through this area.

Go from gorge to beach with this short 40 minute drive as Oribi is situated only 60 kilometers from Driftwood Backpackers.

Clearwater Trails

Much closer to home you will find this mountain biking venue situated in Port Edward on the lower South Coast of Kwazulu Natal. A short 16 kilometre drive will take you there where you will find several trails to explore.

The trails runs through the Umtamvunu River Gorge and will take you through natural forests and the surrounding Banana plantations. The trails range from a short five kilometre ride to the longer thirty kilometre trail.

After this experience you deserve to return to Driftwood Backpackers where you can take a sundowner, throw a steak on the fire or take a stroll on the beach.

Sardine Run Update

SARDINE RUN UPDATE

Last location of the Sardine run 2016
Courtesy of Google Maps we can show you where they are

The latest news on our visitors are that there were pockets of bait fish, Cape garnets and sardines spotted up and down the East Coast this week.

Fishermen are preparing to make use of the opportunity to land some good bait fish this year and it looks like their prospects are good.

When they will be arriving here in KZN waters are not sure because of the weather patterns we are experiencing. One thing is for sure, it won't take long and we will have a frenzy on our hands.

Where are the Sardines?

Good news are pockets are spotted at regular intervals between Port St Johns and Port Elizabeth on the East Coast. Most sighting reports are coming from Coffee Bay and Port Elizabeth area.

Where can I get more info on this annual Sardine run?

If you want to know more about what the hype is about visit the Shark Board page. It might motivate you to experience it first hand.

Be prepared. Book into Driftwood Backpackers Lodge in Leisure Bay on the lower South Coast when they arrive and be assured of a front row seat.
